Custom Monument Steps

The Procedural Generation panel can place your own custom monuments, not only Rust's. Use it to spread your monuments over a generated map with Rust's own placement rules.

Your custom monuments can be placed by the generator in two ways:

Join one of Rust's steps

  1. Give the custom monument a Spawn Folder in its Map Generation settings.
  2. Turn on Enabled. Rust's monument step for that folder then places it with Rust's own monuments.

Its Count says how many times it is in that step's list. At 0 it is left out.

Click the step to see which of your custom monuments join it. The settings start with "Your custom monuments in this step, by their Spawn Folder".

See Map Generation Settings.

Add a step of your own

A step of your own places a list of custom monuments and Rust prefabs with one of Rust's placers, at any place in the order.

TypeWhat it does
MonumentsRust's main monument placer.
Roadside MonumentsPlaces monuments beside the roads.
Railside MonumentsPlaces monuments beside the railways.
Offshore MonumentsPlaces monuments in the sea, a distance from the land.
Decor UniformPlaces prefabs on an even grid, each moved a little.
Decor Value NoisePlaces prefabs in patches, more where a noise is high.
Decor White NoisePlaces prefabs at random places.
Roadside DecorPlaces prefabs along the roads.
  1. Click a step's row. The new step goes after it.

  2. Click the + button on the All Steps row and pick a type. You can also right-click the row and pick a type under Add Step Here. A step called Custom and the type's name appears, marked Custom. Its settings open.

  3. Change Name if you like.

  4. Drag custom monuments and prefabs from the Content Browser onto the step's Prefabs list. You can also right-click one in the content browser and pick Add to and the step's name. Add as many as you want. One that is in the list twice can be placed twice.

    • A monument type takes custom monuments and Rust's monuments.
    • A decor type takes custom monuments and any Rust prefab.

When you drag something the step cannot take, the box under the list says so.

  5. Change the placer's settings under the list if you need to.

    • The Monuments type starts with the Main Monuments step's settings. The other monument types start with Rust's step of that type. Target Count is 0, so every monument in the list gets a try.
    • A decor type starts on the same ground as the Main Monuments step: on land, away from roads, rivers and monuments. Decor Uniform tries a place every 100 m.

To move a custom step, drag its row up or down. A bar shows where it will go, and the list scrolls when you drag near its top or bottom. Only custom steps move: Rust's steps keep Rust's order.

  • To remove a custom step, right-click it and pick Delete Step, then confirm.
  • To put its placer settings back, right-click it and pick Reset Settings.

Click a row in the list to find it in the content browser. Click the X beside it to take it out of the list.

The step leaves out a row with a warning sign:

  • "not found": a custom monument that is not in your Custom Monuments folder any more, or a Rust prefab that Rust no longer has.
  • "not a monument": a Rust prefab in a monument type step that is not one of Rust's monuments.

A custom step that you drag above Terrain Erosion becomes part of the terrain, like Rust's early steps. See How the terrain is handled during a run.

Monuments already on the map

The steps see Rust's monuments, train tunnel entrances and underwater lab entrances on the map, as in Rust, and your own custom monuments. This counts the ones you placed by hand and the ones earlier steps placed:

  • The road, rail, power line and trail steps lead their paths to the monuments' connection points. On a custom monument, these are its Road Connection, Rail Connection, Power Connection and Trail Connection attributes.
  • The monument steps keep their distance from them. A custom monument counts as the whole square of its terrain.
  • The Tunnels step starts its train tunnels at the tunnel entrances, and Underwater Entrances builds the labs out from their entrances.

A custom monument that holds one of Rust's monuments counts as that Rust monument: the paths lead to the Rust monument's own connection points. A custom monument placed inside another one does not count on its own: it is inside the outer monument's square. See Monument Attributes.
