Common Problems
This page lists problems you can meet in RustEdit and what to do about them. The messages in bold are the exact text RustEdit shows. Most messages appear in the Notifications panel.
RustEdit does not start
| Message or problem | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Insufficient Permissions: The program does not have sufficient permissions to write files! | RustEdit cannot write to its own folder. It needs to, for its settings and logs. | Move the RustEdit folder to a place you own, such as a folder in your Documents, or run RustEdit as administrator. |
| The Rust Assets dialog: RustEdit uses the assets of your Rust game directly | RustEdit does not know where Rust is, or cannot find Rust's files at the saved place. | Click Select Rust Install Directory and pick the Rust folder, the one that has the Bundles folder in it. See Installation. |
| The selected directory is not a valid Rust client install directory | The folder you picked has no Bundles\Bundles file in it. | Pick the Rust game folder itself, not a folder above or inside it. |
| An Error! dialog during loading, with Couldn't load root AssetBundle, Couldn't load AssetBundle or Failed to load asset scene | RustEdit could not read Rust's content files. | Make sure Rust is fully installed and updated. In Steam, verify the integrity of Rust's game files. Then start RustEdit again. |
The Error! dialog only has a Quit button, because RustEdit cannot go on without Rust's content.
If Steam updates Rust while RustEdit is open, Rust's files change under RustEdit and it can stop working or close. Save your work and restart RustEdit after a Rust update.
Maps do not open or save
| Message or problem | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| [World] Failed to load scene: and a file path | The file is damaged, or it is not a file RustEdit can read. RustEdit opens an empty map instead. | Check that you picked a .scene, .map or .asset file. Try a backup or an autosave of the map. |
| The Password Required dialog: This file has encrypted data and requires a password to open... | The map was saved with a map password. | Type the password and click Submit. Cancel keeps the map that is open now. |
| You forgot a map password | If you turned Dump Passwords on before you saved, the password is in Configuration/passwords.txt. It is off unless you turn it on. See Settings > Password. | |
| Map passwords need RustEdit Plus. This scene will be saved without its password. Save anyway? | The scene has a password, but your license has no RustEdit Plus. | Click Confirm to save without the password, or Cancel to stop. Sign in with RustEdit Plus to keep the password. |
| Could not add the password to the password file: and a reason | RustEdit saved the map, but could not write passwords.txt. | Check that RustEdit can write to its Configuration folder. |
| The selected map is already loaded | You opened the file that is open now. | To go back to the saved file, use . |
| You can not reload the map until it has been saved | The map has never been saved, so there is nothing to reload. | Save it first. |
| The file is no longer there and was taken off the recent list: and a path | The file in was moved or deleted. | Open it from its new place with . |
| Save and Export is grayed out | A monument is open. Export only works while the map is shown. | Go back to the map, then export. See Export a map. |
| Map Size shows a warning above 6000 | The server needs the RustEdit 2 server extension to run maps bigger than 6000. | Use a smaller size, or put the extension on your server. See The map on a server. |
| [Autosave] The copy of the map was not saved: and a reason | Auto save could not write its copy. Your map and its own file are not changed. | Check that RustEdit can write to the Autosave Folder. Auto save tries again at the next interval. |
The map on a server
| Problem | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| IO entities, building blocks, APCs, the cargo ship, loot profiles or other RustEdit features do not work on the server | For prefabs, Rust itself only places them and gives each one its category. RustEdit's own data in the map needs the RustEdit 2 server extension. | Put the RustEdit 2 server extension on the server. |
| The server does not run a map larger than 6000 | Maps larger than 6000 need the RustEdit 2 server extension. | Put the RustEdit 2 server extension on the server, or make the map smaller. |
The extension is Oxide.Ext.RustEdit.dll, an Oxide extension. See the extension's GitHub page for how to install it. See The RustEdit 2 server extension for what it does.
