Loadout Profiles

A loadout profile is what an NPC spawns with: its clothing, its weapons and the items it carries. You make it in the Loadout Profile Editor, laid out like Rust's inventory, and save it as a .ldprof file. Then you give it to an NPC Spawner, an NPC Vendor or a Vehicle Vendor.

A spawner can have several loadouts: each time its NPC spawns, the server picks one at random. The map carries a copy of every profile its NPCs use.

note

A server needs the RustEdit 2 Server Extension to give each NPC its loadout in place of its own items. Without it, NPCs keep Rust's own.

Which NPCs take a loadout

Only NPCs with an inventory take a loadout: Rust's people, such as the scientists, bandit guards, tunnel dwellers and the scarecrow. The Gen2 scientists (Scientist2, Scientist2.Heavy, Scientist2.Shotgun) and the animals have no inventory: their spawners have no Loadouts list.

Open the editor

Click ToolsProfilesLoadout Profile Editor. The editor opens as a panel, which you can dock like any other panel. It opens the profile you had open last time. To open another, double-click it in the Content Browser, in Profiles > Loadout Profiles.

How to make a profile

  1. In the Content Browser, right-click Profiles > Loadout Profiles and click New Profile.
  2. Type a name and click Save. The Loadout Profile Editor opens with the new, empty inventory.
  3. Click a wear slot and pick a piece of clothing. Do the same for the others.
  4. Click a belt slot and pick a weapon.
  5. Under Selected Slot, set the weapon's ammo and attachments.
  6. Add medical items and other items to the belt and the main grid.
  7. Click Save next to the profile field at the top.

In the item picker, type in the search box or pick a Category to find an item. The search finds an item by its name or its short name, for example rifle.ak.

The inventory

The editor shows the three parts of Rust's inventory:

PartSlotsWhat goes there
Wear8, in two rows of 4Clothing and armor only. The last slot is Rust's backpack slot.
Main24Anything the NPC carries. It drops them when it dies.
Belt6The hotbar. The NPC uses its weapons and medical items from here.

Each slot shows its item's icon, the stack size and a green bar for an item that is not at full condition. A blueprint has a blue square. A small mark shows a weapon with attachments.

  • Click an empty slot: the item picker opens. A wear slot lists clothing only.
  • Click a slot with an item: it is selected, and its settings show under Selected Slot.
  • Drag an item onto another slot to move it there. An item in that slot swaps places. Only clothing can go into a wear slot.
  • Right-click a slot for Pick Item or Change Item, and Clear Slot.

AttachmentsGuns only. Click Add Attachment to pick a scope, silencer or other attachment. The picker lists only the attachments that fit this gun and a free slot of it. Click an attachment to change or remove it.
Clear SlotEmpties the slot.

Give an NPC loadouts

  1. Select an NPC Spawner whose NPC takes a loadout, an NPC Vendor or a Vehicle Vendor.
  2. In the Inspector, find Loadouts.
  3. Click +. A new row shows, with the first loadout profile that the list does not have yet.
  4. To use another profile in the row, drag it from the Content Browser, folder Profiles > Loadout Profiles, onto the row. Or click the row's field and pick it in the list.
  5. Add more rows for more loadouts. The server picks one at random each time the NPC spawns.

An empty Loadouts list keeps the NPC's own items. For the rest of the profile field, such as missing profiles, see Use a profile.

In the scene view

An NPC with loadouts shows in the scene view as Rust's player body, dressed in the clothing of its first loadout and holding the first weapon or tool on its belt. This is how the server builds the NPC's body from its clothing. Without loadouts, a person wears the clothing that Rust gives it, for example a scientist's hazmat suit, and an animal shows as itself.

  • When you save a profile in the editor, the NPCs that show it are dressed again.
  • Bare skin shows Rust's censor squares, as in the game.
  • The body is only a picture: it is not saved, and the server builds its own.

Manage loadout profiles

Loadout profiles are kept in the Loadouts folder of your Profiles folder. They are renamed, copied and deleted like every other kind of profile, and the map and its monuments carry copies of the ones their NPCs use. A map exported with In the map has no NPC spawners and no profiles. See Manage Profiles.

Troubleshooting

ProblemWhat to do
The Notifications panel says "The loadout profile ... was not found. The ... NPCs that use it spawn with their own items"The profile's file is missing and the map has no copy. Make the profile again under the same name, or pick another profile.
A slot shows a short name and no iconYour Rust install has no item with that short name, for example after a Rust update. Right-click the slot and pick another item.
A spawner has no Loadouts listIts NPC has no inventory: a Gen2 scientist or an animal. Pick another NPC.
"Only clothing can go in a wear slot"You dragged an item that is not clothing onto a wear slot. Or you dragged clothing out of a wear slot onto an item that is not clothing: the swap would put that item in the wear slot.
