Duplicate, Lock and Undo

Copy or delete the selected objects, lock or hide the objects you do not want to touch, and take changes back with undo. Select the objects first. See Select Objects.

Duplicate and delete

ItemKeyWhat it does
EditDuplicate SelectionCtrl+DCopies the selected objects.
EditDelete SelectionDeleteDeletes the selected objects. There is no question first.

The keys work with the pointer over the scene view or the Hierarchy. The Hierarchy's right-click menu has them too.

Duplicate puts the copies in the same place as the originals, under the same parent, right after them in the Hierarchy. The copies are selected, so you can move them away at once. A copy gets everything the original has: its children, its name, its Inspector settings and its custom data. Socket links between copied objects are copied too. Lock and hide are not copied.

Delete removes the selected objects and everything under them.

Both are one undo step. The parts of a placed monument cannot be duplicated or deleted one by one: RustEdit says "Parts of a placed monument come from its file. Unpack the monument to change them". See Placed Monuments.

Lock and hide

Lock objects you do not want to move by mistake, such as the terrain's big rocks. Hide objects that are in the way.

  • A locked object cannot be picked or moved in the scene view. You can still select it in the Hierarchy, and Delete still works on it. If a selected group has a locked object in it, the group cannot move. The Prefab Brush and the Merge Map tool leave locked objects alone. In the Hierarchy, a locked object shows a lock icon.
  • A hidden object is not drawn and cannot be picked in the scene view. It is still in the Hierarchy (dimmed), in the scene file and in the exported map.
ItemKeyWhat it does
EditLock SelectionCtrl+LLocks the selected objects and everything under them.
EditUnlock AllCtrl+Alt+LUnlocks every locked object.
EditHide SelectionCtrl+HHides the selected objects and everything under them.
EditShow AllCtrl+Alt+HShows every hidden object again.

The keys work with the pointer over the scene view or the Hierarchy. You can also lock and hide in two other places:

  • The Hierarchy menu. Right-click a row for Lock and Hide: each is checked when all selected objects are locked or hidden. Right-click empty space for Unlock All and Show All.
  • The lock and eye toggles of the Name row in the Inspector.

All three work the same way:

  • They lock or hide the objects and everything under them.
  • The selection stays.
  • Each lock, unlock, hide or show is one undo step.
  • The scene file keeps which objects are locked and hidden. When you open the scene again, they are still locked or hidden.

The parts of a placed monument cannot be locked or hidden one by one. Lock or hide the whole monument.

Undo and redo

ItemKey
EditUndoCtrl+Z
EditRedoCtrl+Y
  • Each gizmo drag, typed value, duplicate, delete, placement and Hierarchy move is one undo step.
  • Selection changes are undo steps too, while Record Selections is on.
  • Lock and hide are undo steps, from the Edit menu, the Hierarchy and the Inspector.
  • Renames are undo steps, from the Hierarchy and the Inspector.
  • In the Inspector, values typed in the Transform panel and changes to custom data are undo steps. Most other Inspector settings are not.
  • The undo history is cleared when you open a map. An open monument keeps its own history.

To set the history, open FileSettings, then Undo:

SettingWhat it does
Max Undo StepsThe maximum number of undo steps to be recorded. 1 to 1000, default 30.
Record SelectionsRecords selections as undo steps. On by default. Turn it off so that clicks do not use up the undo history.

Troubleshooting

ProblemWhat to do
Ctrl+D or Delete does nothing.Move the pointer over the scene view or the Hierarchy, or use the Edit menu.
I cannot duplicate, delete, lock or hide a part of a monument.Parts of a placed monument come from its file. Work on the whole monument, or unpack it. See Unpack a monument.
An object I locked can still be deleted.Lock only stops picking and moving in the scene view. Delete still works on a locked object you select in the Hierarchy.
Undo does not take back a change in the Inspector. Most Inspector settings are not undo steps. Typed Transform values and custom data are.
