Prefab Profiles

A prefab profile is a set of prefabs with a weight and placement settings for each one. The Prefab Brush paints the prefabs of a profile, and prefab splines place them along a line or inside an area. You make and change prefab profiles in the Prefab Profile Editor.

Prefab profiles are saved as .palette files. They work like the other profiles, such as loot profiles.

Make a prefab profile

  1. In the Content Browser, right-click Profiles > Prefab Profiles, and click New Profile.
  2. Type a name and click Save. The Prefab Profile Editor opens with the new, empty profile.
  3. Drag prefabs from the Content Browser onto the Prefabs list. While you drag, a ring shows around the list, and a line shows where the prefab goes.
  4. Set each prefab's options on its card. See Prefab cards.
  5. Click Save next to the profile field at the top.

You can also right-click a prefab in the Content Browser and click Add to Prefab Profile. It goes to the end of the profile open in the editor.

Open a prefab profile

  • Click the profile field at the top of the editor and pick one. Or drag one onto it from the Content Browser.
  • Double-click one in the Content Browser, in Profiles > Prefab Profiles.
  • Right-click a Prefab Profile field, in the Prefab Brush or a prefab spline, and click Open in Editor.
  • Or open ToolsProfilesPrefab Profile Editor. It shows the profile you had open last time.

Save, next to the profile field, lights up when the profile has changes. An asterisk (*) after its name also shows changes that are not saved. When you open another profile while the open one has changes, RustEdit asks first.

With no profile open, or when the open profile was deleted, the editor shows only the profile field and a line that says how to open one.

Prefab cards

Each prefab can be in the profile once. Monuments can be in it too. To change the order, drag a card by its grip. The order does not change what the brush paints. To remove a prefab, click the X on its card.

Each card's top row has a switch that turns the prefab on or off, a color mark (the color of its rings in the scene view), a picture and the name. Point at the name to see the prefab's path. Click the arrow to open the card.

OptionWhat it does
WeightHow often this prefab is picked next to the others. 0 to 10, default 1. A prefab with weight 0 is not placed.
ScaleThe smallest and the biggest size of the prefab, picked at random for each one. 0.05 to 10, default 1 to 1.
Random RotationHow each prefab is turned at random: None (every prefab faces the same way), Around Up (turns each prefab around its up axis, the default) or All Axes (turns each prefab around every axis, for rocks and debris).
Align to SurfaceTilts the prefab to the slope of the ground under it. Off by default.
Height OffsetMeters up from the ground. Below zero sinks the prefab into it. -20 to 20, default 0. With Align to Surface on, the offset goes along the slope's up direction.

A prefab that is not found (for example, after a Rust update) shows "(missing)" after its name and is not placed.

When you save a prefab profile

  • The Prefab Brush, when it paints this profile, takes the new prefabs at once.
  • Each prefab spline in the open map that uses this profile takes a copy of the new prefabs. A spline with Live on makes its prefabs again. The Notifications panel says how many splines changed.

A prefab spline keeps its own copy of the profile's prefabs, so a scene opens the same on a computer that does not have the profile. A saved scene also carries a copy of each prefab profile its prefab splines use.

Manage prefab profiles

To rename, duplicate or delete prefab profiles, and to set the folder they are kept in, see Manage Profiles. When you rename a prefab profile, the brushes and prefab splines that use it take the new name. When you delete one, a brush or spline that uses it keeps its name and shows it as missing.

Prefab profiles are in the Prefabs folder inside the Profiles folder. In the Content Browser, they show in Profiles > Prefab Profiles. Palettes from RustEdit 1 open too: copy them into the Prefabs folder. See Coming from RustEdit 1.

Troubleshooting

ProblemWhat to do
A prefab does not drop on the list.Open a prefab profile first: the editor takes prefabs only while a profile is open. Each prefab can be in it once.
"... is already in the prefab profile"Each prefab can be in the profile once.
"... prefabs of the profile ... were not found"The profile has prefabs that are not in your Rust install, for example after an update. They show as "(missing)".
