Terrain Modifier

Many Rust prefabs change the terrain around them: a monument brings its own heights and ground textures, and a cliff changes the height, splat and topology at its place. The Terrain Modifier panel switches these changes on or off, one map at a time. The Inspector shows it when you select a prefab that carries terrain changes, and it shows only the switches for the maps that prefab can change.

The switches are off when you place a prefab. Turn one on and RustEdit applies the prefab's change to that map at once. The change follows the prefab: move, turn or scale it and the change moves too, delete it and the change goes away. The change is added on top of the map's own terrain, and the exported map has it in its terrain. You can select several prefabs and switch them all at once.

See How prefabs change the terrain for more. The Cliff Brush turns these switches on for the cliffs it places when its Modifiers option is on.

Can edit several selected objects at once. This panel is only shown in some cases.

How Bake works

Bake writes the switched-on changes into the map's own terrain for good, then turns the switches off. After that, the terrain keeps the change when you move or delete the prefab. Only the maps whose switches are on are written.

Bake is one undo step. Ctrl+Z takes the change back out of the map's own terrain and turns the switches back on, so the terrain looks as it did before.

You do not have to bake before you export: the exported map has the switched-on changes in its terrain anyway.

A monument you made yourself has a Monument Terrain panel, whose Bake works the same way. See Monument Terrain.

Tips

  • Where a prefab sets the height, sculpting under it does not show while Apply Height is on. Switch it off to sculpt there, or sculpt around it.
  • Copies of a prefab keep its switches. Set up one prefab, then duplicate it.
